I'm a second-year visual arts graduate student and I find the ethical implications of appropriation in AI-generated art to be particularly troubling. The potential for AI to replicate cultural elements without understanding their significance poses a risk of cultural misrepresentation. This issue is exacerbated by the fact that AI systems can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and reinforce existing power imbalances. Originality is another critical area of concern. Art is an expression of individual experience and perspective. The idea that AI could produce something that is considered truly “original” challenges traditional understandings of creativity and authorship. It raises important questions about the value of human contribution to the artistic process. Transparency is essential to maintain the integrity of the art world. When AI is involved in creating artwork, it should be clearly communicated to the audience to distinguish between human and machine contributions.
